Father…

images (1)He has the strength of a mountain and the majesty of a tree. He has the warmth of the sun and the calmness of a sea. He has a patience that runs deep. He gives you life, nurtures you, teaches you, disciplines you and guides you. He holds your hand at the fair, and with his presence makes you believe that the world is yours. He pretends to be rough on the outside but caress your hair when you are sick. He pampers you in your mother’s absence; he walks you down the aisle and assures you everything is fine. He is a Father. To put in Wordsworth words, “Father! – to God himself we cannot give a holier name.”

A child is not born alone. With the birth of a child comes the birth of a set of parents. While a woman grows into a mother, a man grows into a father in the gradual process over a period of nine months. They say,” In the baby lies the future of the world.” If a mother holds her child close to let him know the world, the father takes him atop a hill so that he can see what his world is like.  Parents complement each other; their love complements each other. Together they weave a tapestry of knitted emotions and intellectual harmony that helps the family sail through the rough storms and over the dark clouds.

A father is the corner stone of the family, providing nourishment and shelter, ensuring its comfort even at the cost of his own necessity. His protection is the most important amenity of a child. It is a father who dreams and sets goal for himself and his family. He teaches his kids, and subtly guides them through the journey of life by setting good examples. He lets them fall; pick them up, and inspires them to try again till they succeed. He reposes his faith and belief in his kids which urges them to move forward in life, take risks and eventually flourish. He is always ready to provide a first-hand experience on various stuff based out of his wisdom, he acquires over the years. He plays the multiple role of being a guide, a friend, a teacher with élan without revealing that he is himself learning and evolving in the process.

He makes innumerable sacrifices for his children, but the greatest and the most difficult of all is letting go. Letting go the very child he raised so tenderly, just so he learns to fly on his own. It’s the most painful sacrifice he makes, but he finds his contentment in beholding his prodigy spread wings and fly towards the horizon with the sun at his back. Despite the innumerable sacrifices and a life full of responsibilities, his’ is the thankless position in the family- the very family which he views as his greatest achievement. He is, ironically, “the provider for all, and the enemy of all.”

Let’s take this day to thank our dear fathers for their countless gifts of love and affection. Take some time to let them know how much you love them, adore them – not just today, but every day.

Is Creativity Endangered?

3Creativity, like many other English words has been used, misused and overused over the years. So much so, that its definition has been mixed up. Anybody who is smart and solves a problem is often elevated to the status of being creative! So, first we need to understand what exactly creativity means.

Ability to create something new, something different is what defines the word creativity. To be precise the ability to think and create something unique is creativity. To put in Bill Moyers’ words, “Piercing the mundane to find the marvelous is creativity.” It is the greatest expression of liberty and thus, a natural extension of our enthusiasm.

A fleeting glance at our immediate surroundings and we see various aspects of creativity, be it in technology, literature, art or music.  We are naturally creative. All we need to do is, break free of our comfort zone, experiment and explore. And this is what exactly is happening all around us. The various forms of art, dance, music and even food! All reeks of creativity! So wherein lays the question of it being endangered.

Yes, we can say, that it is to some extent threatened by plagiarism. But then, I feel that too requires creativity. In fact, society has been doing this “remix phenomenon” for ages in nearly all the fields, including science and technology. For this is how we evolve. We cannot carve out a new structure or reinvent a wheel in every generation. But we can definitely rearrange, modify and or polish the original one to make it better suited for present times. Of course, to do this one requires skill and potential, and here lies the creativity- to be able to present something that already exists- in a new form with a spark of imagination and courage and passion. Even the great Picasso said,” good artists copy, great artists steal.” As long as the due credit to the original is given, it should be treated fairly and solely as inspiration.

Human beings have an innate affinity towards liberty and self-expression. It’s essential for their survival and Creativity is their potential outlet. It allows them to experiment and break free from their comfort zones. We all want to explore our extreme limits, it’s our need.

Creativity is all about experimenting and exploring. It requires action, implementation, passion, and commitment. But above all, it requires the courage to let go of certainties and trusting our instincts. It is allowing oneself to make mistakes. Scott Adams has wisely said, that creativity is allowing oneself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. So, as long as our needs for self-expression and liberty are alive, creativity continues to thrive. And this need of ours is insatiable.Period.
